Looking back over my reports for this event provides an interesting snapshot of the varying English weather. Last year we were worried about getting the stakes into the sun baked ground. Not this year! Luckily the rain that greeted us as we gathered for the race had cleared in time for the actual competition. Looking back to last year's result I also see the same two teams were in the top two slots, but this time it was MISFITS (who have been in the top two for 4 consecutive years) who pipped LEC runners to the post, but LEC runners took the age corrected prize once again. Congratulations also to the Maths&Stats random walkers. Their random walk can't have been too haphazard as they were top mixed team, 3rd on the corrected rankings and 4th overall. The ladies team's (Katrina and the waves) request for a change of prize for next year was duly noted. It's a while since we had 3 Physics Dept. teams competing namely the Prawn Stars (physics students) , and two staff teams, Biohazard and The Neutrino Accelerators. The latter one had the misfortune of having me as it's first leg runner, a handicap from which they never recovered.
Every year there is something new to make the event more interesting for the runners and organisers. This year I received an email on the morning of the race from Phil Longton, first leg runner from The Chippy Teas which started:
Alex, You may be interested to know that I completed a risk assessment last week on the new traffic management measures outside the new sports centre....
My heart sank as I read that, however he then went on to recommend we marshall the new zebra crossing, but luckily we already had that covered, and the email finished off:
There will be a contractor working in the area tomorrow cutting out the tree stumps to improve visibility further. The contractor is being made aware of the event (so as to not affect it) by my colleague Ian Sturzaker who is in my team also running the race!
So that was alright!
Thanks as always to the willing band of helpers, my fellow “committee member” Rob, Steve who put out flags, and manned Green Lane, Robin and James who manned the zebra crossing, and then collected in half of the flags, and Gareth Hughes who marshalled the perimeter road, including the pile of gravel which was conveniently placed in the way of the runners this morning. Thanks also to Niels Laustsen for helping collect in flags.
As I have said already, next year I plan to have a whole new route starting from the new Sport's Centre, and using the Woodland Trail so far as possible and with the same mix of leg lengths as now. By the way, the original Physics Relay route followed the path of something called the “Black Route” - one of a number of jogging routes which were denoted around the campus in the '80s, but have long since been forgotten.
