I agree with your description of the reactions in face of contradictions and that seeing a variety of opinion in no way proves there is no right opinion or no truth.
I also agree with the scientific dead end of eventually just having to say certain things “just are.” And even if later discovery “explains” things in terms of other more fundamental things then that still leaves those new things as “just are.” Whether it is possible to continue deeper and deeper or not is open for debate I suppose but it seems to me that at some point you do have to admit that certain things “just are.”
Then you say that for human affairs that people can use dialectic to discard wrong opinions. This is a useful thing but I don’t see how it ever escapes the realm of opinion (namely, what the group discussing things can come to agree upon that isn’t wrong) and relative to the opiners. I don’t deny that this can be a superior way of at least ridding contradictory opinions but in the end it’s still relative to that groups world view, refined, consistent and just as it may be, or seem to them. I will say that such a consensus would likely come across as cohesive or less contradictory than many other world views or opinions but it will be heavily influenced by what that group itself desires and thus deems as “good” or appropriate.
In the end they can say, we hold this view because it will generate X result and we want that but then you can ask a chain of why they want it and eventually they will have no answer beyond that they just want it. This was the whole gist of my argument with Ted about why logic may be a better way to run a society but in the end it will come down to using logic to explain and defend the fundamental premises or desires of the group doing the deciding and those fundamental desires, at their root, just are. (And I’m not saying that people couldn’t be brought to see the light and get more in touch with their true deep desires or values and change their mind from a previous position).
